National Wear Red Day for Women’s Heart Health
The GFWC Antelope-North County Women’s Club and the General
Federation of Women’s Clubs are asking that you wear Red on February
6th for National Wear Red Day - a day when we can all take women’s
health to heart by wearing red to show our support for women’s heart
disease awareness. The message for February 6th is “Heart Disease
Doesn’t Care What Color You wear. It’s the #1 Killer of Women.”
Everyone can take part in this national movement by wearing a red
dress, shirt, tie or Red Dress pin from www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/hearttruth/ these pins run from $2.50 to $20.00. You can also read more about women’s heart health at this website.
Women’s heart health is more than a cute red dress pin. The goal of
this campaign is to make women more aware of the danger of heart
disease. Women 40 to 60 are the target group because this is when the
risk of heart disease develops. It develops slowly so younger women
should also be aware of the risks. African American and Hispanic women
have disproportionately higher rates of heart disease. Partly because
of the risk factors which include obesity and physical inactivity, high
blood pressure and diabetes are part of the problem. The Red Dress
project is trying to inspire women to take action to reduce their risks
for heart disease.
Remember that Heart Truth starts with you. Talk to your doctor, find
your risk and take action to lower it. Please wear Red on February 6th
and take action against heart disease in women.
The next meeting of the GFWC Antelope-North County women’s Club will
be on February 14th, a good day to think about heart health, at Perko’s
Café on Watt Ave, just north of Elverta Road. The meeting starts at
1:30pm. Call Dori at 332-7133 or e-mail us at antelopeCFWC@comcast.net. We would love to see you there.
