Here are a few tips to keep in mind during a remodel in your home. These are common things that during, before and after your home renovation you’ll be grateful you did.
1. Keep All The Paperwork
Having a folder or file system for all the contracts, business cards, receipts and other associated paperwork will save you the hassle down the road if you need the info for any reason.
2. Save Some Paint
In some cases, matching paint colors and blends can take more than 2 or 3 trips to the local hardware store. Ask your painter to save you a can of each color. This way, if you need to do some touch up painting, you’ll have it it on hand.
3. Electrical Outlets
Having electrical outlets in the proper locations is important. The same is true with phone jacks and TV connections, as well. Make sure you and your contractor are on the same page so you don’t have the burden of adding them later.
4. Have a Back-up Housing Plan
Depending on the type of remodel you're doing, you should have emergency plan for spending a night (hopefully not more) away if needed. Sometimes during a project electricity, water or both could be off for a day and you’ll enjoy yourself more if you find a place to stay where you can shower and have a hot meal.
5. Pictures
Take lots of pictures. Doing so will help you remember why you upgraded and renovated. Taking a look at before and after pictures will give you a sense of accomplishment and an overall good feeling. Pictures also can help when you need to show a concern or problem to a contractor down the line. Emailing a picture saves everyone time, and I know this saying to be true: “time is money”.
Have fun with your home improvements big or small. Keep in mind that everything you do or don’t do to your home is having a impact on its value.
